GMA Pallet Size: Why 48x40 Is the U.S. Standard
The 48x40 GMA pallet is the most common pallet size in U.S. distribution. Here's why it dominates warehousing, retail, and 3PL operations — and when to use other sizes.
What is a GMA pallet?
GMA stands for the Grocery Manufacturers Association, which set the original 48x40-inch four-way stringer pallet standard now used by roughly one-third of all new wood pallets produced in the United States.
GMA pallets are designed to fit standard 53-foot dry vans (30 pallets per load), grocery DC racking, and most automated retail conveyor systems.
Why 48x40 dominates U.S. logistics
Big-box retailers (Walmart, Target, Costco, Kroger) require inbound freight on 48x40 pallets. That single requirement cascades upstream through every CPG manufacturer and 3PL in their supply chain.
The size also evenly divides a 96-inch trailer width (two pallets wide, pinwheel-loaded), which maximizes cube utilization.
When to use other pallet sizes
42x42 is common in paint, chemicals, and telecom. 48x48 is used in some beverage and drum applications. Euro pallets (1200x800mm / ~47x31in) are required for European-bound export shipments.
